Buying Checklist

I spoke with the owner of Bonsai Concept Canada.

She has imported 4 Japanese Deshojo maple.

The basic , they are ~17 years old. 18 inch in height, trunk wider then 1 inch.

She has one potted, the other are pre-bonsai.

Price are in Canadian dollars.

210$ for the potted one.
180$ for the other three.

I will probably go see them this weekend.

I made a small checklist for what to look for ;

Trunk
Nebari
Ramification
internodes length

Am I missing something ? Add if you please.

Thanks
Patrick

Take some chop sticks with you. Use them to probe the soil for roots. If you are not allowed to do this then DON'T BUY

You have already taken care of a key element by choosing to buy from from a reputable specialist nursery.

Acer palmatum 'deshojo' is a slow grower and therefore a slow healer. Beware of ugly scars.

Rootage: Look for uniform and natural roots - well positioned spreading roots. (Make sure that it is firm in the pot - wobbly trees may indicate root problems.)

Trunk: Even taper from roots to crown (no scars)

Foliage: should be healthy and tightly packed with vigor even in lower growing shoots.

Branches: Good branch placement - no wire scars

The ramification and internode length are probably not primary considerations for your tree. If this is presently a problem on any of the trees, it can be more easily corrected than root, trunk, branch placement, or health problems.

Choice is naturally yours. I can only make suggestions base on experience.
