Hi all. This question I am sure has been asked but I checked old posts & did not see anything. I have been looking for a place to buy bonsai close to home. With the cold temps I am afraid that too much time inbetween delivery would not be good. In the past I have ordered trees from Brussel's Bonsai (http://www.brusselsbonsai.com/). The last one I ordered was the dawn redwood. Very nice, but I wound up killing it sorry to say. Not their fault at all. Another place I found online that is in my state is Big apple bonsai (http://www.bigapplebonsai.com/). Has anyone ever heard or bought anything from them? I compared their prices & they do seem cheaper. I am thinking about taking the chance but am not sure. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks!

hm... big apple bonsai seems kind of like a novelty bonsai store... i would suggest not buying mallsai type of bonsai... sticks in a pot, ya know?
i've heard nothing but good about brussel's though... i would rather spend my money on some nice nursery stock than mallsai... you'll get more for your money at least. Craig |

Yeah - I looked and didn't see anything there that wasn't run of the mill stick in a pot stuff.
I can understand your hesitance to not try to bring in a plant with winter upon us (is it?) but depending on what type of tree and from where you may luck out. If you can select a tree that goes dormant it could be shipped now and the cold would not bother it. It could even come bare root or at least reduced root mass to save on shipping - that is if you have the materials and ability to pot up when you receive it. What kind of tree are you looking for and that may help in directing you to a good seller close to you. Perhaps scan the New England Bonsai Gardens site here. They have some good starter stuff as well as some nice advanced stuff. Seem to be good people.

Buying Bonsai
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I never heard of the term "mallsai" & it gave me a good laugh. I tried to check out International Bonsai but most of the site is under construction. I looked at Bonsai of Brooklyn but I saw no difference in the bonsai than what Big Apple Bonsai has on their site? Am I missing something? How do I tell the difference between a mallsai or not? Big Apple Bonsai & Bonsai of Brooklyn both seem to have the same looking/quality trees, I think?

If you want to see something other than mallsai, stop looking at mallsai The trees at both those sites are similar because they are similar.Look elsewhere. Look at some othe sites listed here for a broader look at what's out there: This is only a partial list of bonsai nurseries in the U.S. http://www.bonsai-nbf.org/site/nurseries.html |

I have ordered from New England Bonsai before and was really pleased. They were really nice and helpful over the phone, and I was happy with the stock that I recieved. And it arrived from its coast to coast trip quite well, they packed it really nice.
oh, its www.nebonsai.com |
