buttermilk with your moss?

Everyone says to use buttermilk or yoghurt when applying blended moss- but it all seems so anecdotal. Anybody ever tried a comparison to see if it really helps?

Re: buttermilk with your moss?

Buttermilk or sour milk is often used when growing moss from spores or ground dried moss. Usually one would make a slurry of moss and milk and paint it onto rocks or bricks as a growing substrate in partial shade. The moss is lifted a couple months later and used on bonsai, mainly for show trees, saikei and slab plantings.

I would not use milk directly on my bonsai!

BTW, Treebay.com still sells Kyoto moss spores on our website, but there has not been a big call of mail-order spores (of any kind) recently!

Regards,

Matt

Re: buttermilk with your moss?

Dear Dan,
normaly I use buttermik to make give ornaments for the japanesgarden an antik touch. In this case you will have moss from spores.
For Bonsai I dry moss and when it is dry I make a powder of them.
This powder I put on the soil of my bonsai and keeo it erverytime lightly wet.
After a time you will have a very nice moss carpet.

The guy with the best moss around here puts snails in a blender with powdered moss and makes a smmoothie! He then uses buttermilk diluted by 50% in a squirt bottle and mist them several times a day. I think he's crazy but he has nice moss!

&quotoes this eggnog tastes funny to you?"
"Um... that's not exactly eggnog."
