Burnt beech leaves

Hi, I have a F. purpura tortuosa (16" hi., windswept/semicascade) in a large, heavy pot for now. There's not much choice for placement between strong a.m. sun and strong p.m. sun and leaves are burning daily... and it's very hard to move it and shade can't be rigged (now) that won't blow away. How much of the foliage (or at least wide leaf edges) can burn before the whole thing is permanently damaged? I'm concerned about new leaves growing in (or not) next spring, more so than I am about keeping the present ones. Thank you.

Rima,

It would be helpful to know generally where you live. Here in California, my beech will get sunburned leaves during the middle of the summer. Half or more of each leaf may be brown and crispy, depending on how hot the summer has been. Remember, the upper and outer crispy leaves are protecting others underneath. The buds seem uneffected, and the tree always comes back strong in the spring.

If you have a choice between morning sun, or afternoon sun, put your beech in morning sun.

Hope that helps
Brian

Hi, thank you Brian for your advice re a.m. vs p.m. sun, but my problem is that I can't move the thing practically every day (over a wall, v. heavy pot, etc.) so I'll just have to figure some way to shade it a bit in the a.m. that won't blow down, but I appreciate your letting me know it should recover so that by next year I'll have a better set-up.
BeeJay - I also have a strange (rare) family name and when I Googled it once I found a wonderful new, if unrelated friend, so I do understand. "Rima" is from Green Mansions, and I've wanted to be the Bird Girl (R.) since I was 10 (and I'm just about your age now :-). Sorry that we're unlikely to be family, but as we seem to have other things in common, feel free to write me at ladycat@rushcomm.ca.

I keep my beech in open shade all summer long. Not deep shade but protected directly overhead.

Regards,

Matt
