Plus some adhesive?
What did you use to round out the handle? Are you going to throw a coat of polyurethane on the wood? |

It didn't take all that long and I had a good time making it.
You are right about the adhesive, but I had some contact cement and old paint brush. You can get a small container of contact cement for around $5 and a cheep brush for around $1. I think I might stain the wood a little darker first I think that should help hide some of the dirt too then some polyurethane to protect the wood. I am also thinking of adding some eye bolts around the side of the turn table for tying the tree to. I think that will help with some bending stuff. I'll post another pic after that is finished. Spoonman,
I have one that I built at the Midori workshop, see post build a turntable that Adam linked. I use mine for the ability to turn my plant during pruning and re-potting. Sometimes, I just put a plant on it and study the plant for styling ideas. I know other bonsai artists that build plain ones and place them under their plants on their growing benches so that they can turn the bonsai so that they get equal sided sun which prevents lopsided growth. You can buy ready made ones from bonsai catalogues but they are much more costly. Hope this gives you ideas! Lesley

I have been putting off getting a turntable because the prices are too high; and face it, they are not a necesity. I think I may have a go at making one next weekend. It looks like it isn't too expensive to make one.
Thanks for bringing up the thread on how to make them.

Charles, I'll wager you'll change your mind about the necessity of a turntable the first day you actually own one. Adam, Good Job! BTW that device used for the brake in the article you attached is an anti-burglar gizmo used to secure sliding doors and windows. If you have a Home Depot, OSH or Lowes around, they should have them in the window hardware area. Do a search on http://www.homedepot.com for "SLIDING DOOR LOCK" and they come right up ![]() Prime Line Products Sliding Door Lock Regards, Matt

Matt,
I use them often when I work at Jim Smith's nursery, and my opinion on them has stayed the same. They are a littel helpful for larger trees, but not too much. I find myself often putting the lock on the turntable and just walking around the tree as I work on it. The only real necesity for styling bonsai is a concave cutter. All of the other items just make our life easier (yes, that includes wire).

Why would you use a tool often if you don't see its utility? Lock it and walk around it? Why?
Gotta disagree with you on the wire issue, too, otherwise we'd have bonsai that look like the Convention catalogs from the 20's. ![]()

The bench I work on is low, and turntable adds about 10" of height; just enough to make me happy and keep me from being the hunchback of notredame.

the table i work in is about a meter high, bout the right height when kneeling down. the turn table sounds like a good idea, might have a go at making one, and see how it turns out. still yet to buy some concave cutters though.
