BSF Convention

ive talked to a couple people on this board, but i was wondering who would be at the BSF Annual Convention this weekend? it would be great to make some of my BT friends into real-life friends.

i will be there today from about 1 or 2 on until whenever as well as tomorrow since my club is hosting it this year.

anyway, if you are there, i will have a white BSOB shirt on with my name, Jeff, written on it. i hope to see some of you there...

Jeff:

I had really been hoping to get down for the BSF convention, particularly since my sensei, Chase, would be there. I was also looking forward to seeing my Florida friends and "wallowing" in tropicals.

However, a bunch of personal problems forced me to to give it up.

I hope those who go will post lots of reports and pictures.

Have a great show!

I made it up for about an hour last night. Unfortunately my new job at Sears had me working all weekend, so I could not go at any other time.

well, i made it today and yesterday. i took a lot of pictures yesterday of the exhibit. there were some nice trees there, but unfortunately, i forgot my camera today. ill have to post the pictures in some sort of gallery when i am not as drunk (a friend came over for a pre-fourth drink at my house with homemade tempura made by my wife). maybe sometime in the near future, a thread about how we can make conventions here in the states both a) better attended and b) more...ahh...well...professional is not the right word, but i think they need more impact (that is how my wife would say it in english) somehow. im a bit perplexed as to how to go about saying this (especially now).

i did watch jerry meislik's...what is the word! english is failing me now. but i watched a class of his for a while. i wish i could have actually taken the class because i sure learned a lot just by watching. this wednesday he will be giving a demo for my club and i will definitely be there for that. one of my friends from club actually took the class and kind of got a free wiring lesson from ben oki who was in attendance after my friend worked with jerry. the material for this class was a wrightia religiosa and i told him that someday that he cant say he styled the tree by himself. i was defintiely jealous of him.

this was actually my first show here in the states, and it was my first chance to see what it was like at a show with vendors. one of my personal highlights of the show was being able to find Jahn Naka's Bonsai Techniques I and II. of course i bought both, and it is so refreshing to read what he says are the "rules" and have them make sense. it's somewhat mind-blowing.

i also was able to meet a couple of fellow bonsaitalkers. one was bone-sigh (ryan), a great guy who has a very good family going for him, and the other was jason schley (daytonabonsai) from Schley's Bonsai up in daytona, florida. there was a review of a trip written by BrianBay9 (brian) back in december of 2004. the pics that brian took of the stock out there were pretty good, but i have to be honest, they did not do justice to the stock at his table at the show. i picked up a couple of chinese elms from him (one of the elms was for my wife who is slowly but surely getting deep into this obsession with me), and i am very happy with it. furthermore, he is about the nicest person that i met there, extremely helpful and very easy to befriend. by the way, jason if you read this, please dont sell that grape sumo that was at the show! i want it! lol

anyway, it was a good experience for me, and i hope that in a couple of years (or so) that some of my trees will be shown at a BSF convention...

jeff

ps i found it very funny that people in general knew better as "ripssurf" rather than by my name, jeff.

I was there from Thursday eve until Monday afternoon vending while wife was at the beach, mostly.

Show was VERY poorly attended....can't say why but, as usual, most vendors felt the effect. Great site, great hotel, but attendance was wayyyyy down from last year, ditto w/ sales. . I don't believe it had to do with WBC as some said since most of the Florida folks I saw at WBC , a dozen or so, were also at the BSF convention.

Charles, didn't see you. I asked JVL where his apprentice was....he said you were busy selling shoes

Club night was most entertaining program again.

I brought home my usual truck load of great tropicals.

Bart, you need to see the TE's I got !

Dale
