Broom Style
Do you think that Broom Style is possible on a slanting trunk??
Thanks! |

Re: Broom Style
Possible? Certainly.
Desirable? Hard for me to imagine.

Re: Broom Style
Simsorbarton: I seems to me that if you change the design of the broom style tree it will be called something else. Also one of the reasond that a broom stile tree works is because the trunk is directly under the mass of foliage and creates ballance. When you tilt the trunk the structure of the foliage will have to change to create the ballance that you will be looking for. Sounds like fun

Re: Broom Style
Thanks. I have asked you so coz it is the style which the tree had naturally when collected & it looked well. Here is a raw not so clear pic of this Mediterranean Buckthorm which I am talking about. It is taken when I had just collected it. Can you suggest any style?
Thanks ![]() ![]() |

Re: Broom Style
Simsorbarton: This buck thorn looks to be more shrub than tree, which is ok. Many bonsai are created from this kind of material. One of the things that I do with new material that I have not worked with is to grow it and live with it for a year or so to get the feel of how it grows and reacts to care and pinching. This also allows time to get to know what conditions the plant likes, things like water sun and fertalizer. Just some things to think about.....ripsgreentree

Re: Broom Style
The tree that makes the best broom style is the Zelkova. The Chinese Elm can also be trained in this manner if it's got a straight trunk, but the Zelkova is the best.
I'll be taking a picture soon of the tree I'm posting. The leaves are just developing. This tree was grown from a cutting about 15 years ago. The picture is from 1995.
