Broken Branch

Today I was wiring up a nursery stock black pine. Sometime during the wiring process I broke a branch. I quickly and very easily put it back together and took some tape and wrapped the branch. How long before I will know if the branch will make it or not. :

Re: Broken Branch

Well it depends...
If you've severely injured the ring of bark around the hard wood of the branch (the phloem) the branch would survive for a week or two but it would then slowly die and wilt.
If you've severly injured the hardwood and the ring of bark the branch would die within days or hours!
If you've injured none of these severely, ie a portion of the bark and hardwood are left intact the branch won't die

Re: Broken Branch

Too bad, Adam,

Did you split a branch or break it clean off? If it was broken off, it'd done-for. 100% guaranteed dead. If it merely split or cracked, there is a possibility that it can be saved. Treat the break liberally with white glue. Drying out is the chief danger, and the glue will help to keep the surfaces airtight until the tree decides on its own whether it will be able route enough moisture through the available xylem until begins to heal.

In any case you will know in 1 month or sooner.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Broken Branch

There is only a little split in the branch and not that big either. So I have a feeling it might live.
