Breaking the Rules

I would like to get opinions on how long a person has to be into Bonsai before they can start breaking the rules. Obviously this is going to be a different number depending on how skilled a person is, but maybe it would be helpful for me (and maybe others) to hear opinions on this and why.

Never. You obey them even in breaking them, honoring them in the breach as it were.

yeah, I said it

To misquote somebody on SNL "Rules? We dont' need no stinking rules!....."

You can always break the 'rules', and if you do there is no bonsai police out there waiting to pounce. The 'rules' of style and compostion and care and .... are there only if you want to follow them. They are probably the result of someone else's breaking rules at some time and from their experience developing guidance for themselves and others that over time gets accepted as general wisdom and ultimately become rules themselves. I am sure some anthropologist could explain the process of experimentation and new experience becoming rules or norms or whatever you want to call them, but for me they exist and are generally beneficial to both newcomer and master in developing trees that are healthy, interesting and pleasing to the eye. Until someone has a better idea, tries it and the beginning of a new rule is born...

My two cents for what it's worth

They aren't "rules" as Fletch says. They are generally accepted practices that result in good bonsai design. It's your choice whether or not to utilize good design practices. You get what you design/deserve.

You can start breaking the rules as soon as you know them.

Theres a lot of wisdom on this post. I agree wholeheartedly with Pootsie and Treebay...fwiw. Only break the rules when they are in the way of good design... timeframes are arbitrary.

Hey Brian,

I'd say break the "rules" as soon as you want to.As long as you are satisfied with your results who am i to argue.Have fun .If you're interested in what others think of your trees post some pictures. If you don't care what others think of your trees...if bonsai to you is a medium of self expression,a hobby to give your hands something to do and nothing else then do whatever you want and enjoy yourself.

To paraphrase:

Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse.

Did you learn to run before you could walk? Did you walk before you could crawl?

It's a natural order of things. You learn the basics - first. Rules of bonsai design is a misnomer. There isn't some awful punishment awaiting those who choose a different path (except you may get ridiculed for making unwise decisions).

I have to choose "never" for the time to break the rules. It's not that you can't as much as it is there is no set time. It might happen the first day or you may never do it. It is not on a timetable.

John
