A Boxwood Saga

Dear All:
Last year, a friend of mine in California sent me several Boxwood (Buxus japonica, I believe). He had been passing a home where a gentleman was digging up a hedge. The guy was complaining that he would have to pay someone to take them away. My friend volunteered for free.! Nothing like an Urban Yamadori!!!
The one pictured here was placed in a planter designed and copyrighted by Vance Wood (better known as the Mugo Man).
There were hardly any roots when I planted it on March 24, 2004.
In this first picture you can see where I mulched the whole planter into an area beside our front steps, burying the planter. All pictures were taken today, 04/18/04, just a little bit short of 13 months!

Here's the planter as it was pulled out of the ground before turning the hose on it.

After removal from the planter. This took some doing, some of the roots were lost.

The underside after removing about four inches of the root ball, and many of the larger roots were cut back. I had to chip them back one little bit at a time. After one hour and several wettings of the roots, I had gone as I could. Frankly, I was pooped!

Finally I potted it into the deepest pot I had available.

Hopefully, the foliage will fill out this year, and next year I will reduce the root ball another inch or so.

Chris:
The Vance Wood Planter has screening on all four sides and on the bottom. Obviously, even when this planter is not in the ground oxygen must be feeding the roots. They do grow profusely....
I, also, planted another Boxwood in a plastic colander. Hopefully, in the next few days, I will have time to photograph it and add it to this post, when I repot.
