A Bougainvillea surprise!
Dear Memebers:
Jim Moody sent me a Bougainvillea as a gift in response to a painting I had sent him as a surprise. It was of his Brazilian Rain Tree.(it was the last time I talked to him before he passed away). I studied this teree for over a year and love the beautiful orchid bracts that were produced, but I kept coming back to the trunk being too long. I decided to air-layer the trunk. Here are a few of the pictures. I started the air layer in June

I lef the separated trunk on my bench, and watered it a couple times, just for the heck of it, and low and behold in less than a month new growth has appeared. I have no idea what I will do with this separated plant, but I will continue to watch and see what Ma nature has in store for me.

Nice work, Carl.
Bougies just seem determined to survive. I have had a patio bougie (not a bonsai) that absolutely thrives on neglect. I brought it in last winter, just for the heck of it, and stuck it in a west window. In the spring, I stuck it outside again, and was rewarded with a great display of blooms (better than on my bonsai - maybe there's a lesson here!). Cut it back hard in September, and brought it in again early this week. (We have not yet had a frost here in Central New Jersey.) I'll probably repot it next spring. It's still in the original nursery pot and soil. |

Carl,
Very impressive step by step pictorial on air layering, thank you. Great photography. I was impressed that you used bonsai soil for the air layer instead of more traditional peat moss, seems to have worked very well. Gotta love two trees instead of one, that's the great thing about air layers. Thanks for sharing, Will Heath |

Good airlayer job Carl. An improvement in the future tree for sure.
As a humorous note to this, three weeks ago when I went to Miami for their show I stopped at a bonsai business friends place in West Palm Beach. He was busily driving around neighborhoods picking up large bougies blown out or taken out after the hurricanes. He saws them off and pots the "cuttings" ( up to as big as my thigh!) in soil and they take off. If he can't get to them right away he coats the cut to keep it from drying out until he can get them potted. He had oodles of them, all sizes, at two sites. I picked out two for my favorite customer ( ME) to pick up this July during the BSF show. I can't believe the size of some of these rooted cuttings I've gotten from him in the past. What a great suprise when you start raking out a 10 gallon pot of soil and find a fringe rootbase on a cutting that will pop right into a small bonsai pot. Dale

Dear All:
By now you all know that I am a lover of the indoor trees. The Bougainvillea is at the top of my favorite list.... As Dale explains, and Bart reinforced it, the Bougainvillea does not want to lie down, and keeps coming back. Concerning air layering with regular Bonsai soil. I find the advantage is after you separate the tree, you can just remove the deli container, in this case, and the loose soil will fall right into your new pot, so there is no waste. Most of the tender roots do not have to be touched. I just tie the new trunk into the pot for several weeks until the roots establish themselves. I did forget to show you the cut trunk in the deli container. If I am lucky I will include it here.
