Post Bougainvillea Soil Mix?

What's up everyone? I have a varieagated bougainvillea that will need a repot this year. The tree is about 9yrs old & I have had it for almost 2yrs. I am just wondering if anyone has suggestions on a soil mix? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The key factor is great drainage. Bougies will rot in wet soil. So use something that drains quickly and does not stay wet for days at a time.

S&W,
Good advice by Heir Meislik above as always. I will say one thing bout dem bougys. they don't need repotting like most other trees. The roots grow slow and it takes forever to get a simple root pad.

If you really think you need to repot use a lot of aggregate material (sand, pumice, lava etc) and I have found you can go 4-5 years or more before roots start to fill a container. Leaves reduce well as root space diminished.

Really tie your tree in extra well too, it may take a whole growing season or more before the tree is really steady after a repot. Show us some color later in the year---I wish you well

Why ?

O cuz aggregate material breaks down much slower hence the ability to go extended years with out your soil tuning into black mush.

uummmmmmm mush

I have 3 Bougys but nothing near specimen level. I have them in a fast draining mix with a little bit of peat.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I know that bougie's grow slow but the mix that it's in is breaking down and is starting to look like dirt from outside in my back yard. This tree is supposed to put out some pretty sweet red flowers and I'm trying to do what I can to help it along. Thanks again!

Don't bougys need to dry out some before "blooming"? They are like weeds here in So. Calif. They seem to like dryness, and come out in glorious reds, salmons, and oranges.

When the leaves reduce, do the "blooms" reduce as well? Since they are more like leaves than flowers?

Hey Joanie,
Nice to hear from you. Good questions and observations. I don't believe they need a dry time even though it is true that a tree in strees will tend to try to reproduce itself and the beginning of that process is the flower.

For the overall health of the tree I thing a steady water pattern is best. Bracts don't seem to reduce even though they resemble leaves. Are your boug. budding or blooming yet?

Bougie's are tough here in N.Y.

I have killed way too many Bougie's here in N.Y.! They are togh (at least for me) to keep alive here. The one that the post is about is the only one I've been able to keep alive. Oh to live in Florida!!!!!!
