Bosnian pine

Does anybody out there have any experience with this kind of pine? Does it bud back readily? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Bosnia

Most trees I have seen labled as Bosnian Pine, are in fact a variety of Black Pine native to Eastern Europe. They should back bud as well as any of the Black Pines.

Like Vance I too have noticed that most of the landscape bosnian pines I have seen are Pinus nigra. I have seen a few "true' specimen Pinus heldreichii they are nice trees with really stiff thick needles, don't know how well thye will go to bonsai culture, haven't seen anything on the european sites about them, could just be an oversight on my part. I was at the nursery yesterday...they had some Bosnian pine...Pinus leucodermis 'Irish Belle', very interesting, looks like a semi-dwarf, small needles, compact, most about 2'-3', but $149.95 each. if it was a graft...it was very well done. 1/3 the size needles of my regular Bosnian.

From Monrovia,
Plant History
This coniferous evergreen tree is classified into the Pinaceae, and the genus was classified by the Swede, Carolus Linnaeus in the 18th century. This huge genus contains about 90 species of evergreen species from the northern hemisphere around the world. They are perhaps the most important of all commercial timber species. This tree was formerly known as the subspecies P. heldreichii var. leucodermis, but has since been given its own species and P. heldreichii no longer exists in the references, or is simply considered synonymous. P. leucodermis was finalized by Franz Antoine, 1815-1886 a French botanist. By any name, these trees are native to eastern Europe, well known in Bosnia hence the common name, and are also found in Italy.

The nomenclature appears to not be as open and closed as Monrovia would like to make us believe, Pinus heldreichii var leucodermis is still hanging around in horticultural nomenclature circles- now if you want to meet some people who need pocket protectors to complete their outfit- do horticultural nomenclature. Sorry Linneaus....
