G'day Eric...

Have a look at THE ART OF BONSAI DESIGN, by Colin Lewis, an accomplished American Bonsai Artist and Teacher, and, in the not too distant past, an immigrant from the UK.

Colin takes a hand full of plants, for example...from an Elm sucker, in 1974 to a fully ramified broom style show piece in 2000...and, a collected Elm stump in 1987, to magnificant speciman in 2000.

Excellently illustrated with photos...and drawings...

My opinion? Outstanding!

Pat

"The Art of Natural Bonsai" by Dave Joyce features case histories of trees he developed using photos and sketches. He even includes the mistakes made on a few. They are not year by year but do nicely show the sequence.

Also check Walter Pall's web site. He has photo sequences of a number of trees.

G'day, Eric. It's worth mentioning that "The Art of Bonsai Design" also contains loads of very useful info in the form of side boxes with each history. I personally think Colin Lewis is about the best author (on this subject) that I've yet found. He has written numerous books, some with very similar titles, but this is the one you want. It's out of print, of course, but Barnes & Noble recently had many good used copies on offer.

Hadley.

Nice book: "Bonsai Life Histories" by Martin Treasure. "The Lives of over 50 bonsai trees in photos and words"
