BonsaiWIKI Encyclopedia Now Online!

Bonsai Wiki

We've started a wiki - an online encyclopedia of bonsai. I've started by reorganizing information from the bonsaiTALK Faq. The idea is to make it into an information repository about bonsai. Right now it is very rough, but it's also interesting.

GETTING TO IT:

You can reach the wiki from here, where you can start following links and reading about bonsai. Eventually you will reach a dead end where there is no more information. There, you'll be invited to create your own page. Don't worry about breaking the wiki, changes are logged and can be undone by an administrator.

Main Page:
http://wiki.bonsaitalk.com

This page also might be interesting:
http://wiki.bonsaitalk.com/index.ph...ccent_plantings

CONTRIBUTING TO THE WIKI

You're welcome to contribute to the wiki, but keep in mind that contributions must be your OWN writing or photos and cannot contain copyrighted materials.

Submissions to the wiki will be made available to the public, and the site will share the copyright with you. So keep this in mind before you add or edit. Your work will almost certainly be linked to edited mercilessly and evolve.

TALKING ABOUT IT.

On each article in the wiki you'll see some links on the left. You can use those to discuss or edit the WIKI. There is a link called "Discuss this page" that may be of particular interest. There you can make suggestions about changes, or you can go right in and Edit this Page. But if you do that, the changes will be logged and may be changed themselves, re-edited, or rejected entirely.

Wiki Login

You can set up a WIKI account for yourself that will help keep track of your contributions. Maybe later we'll tie that in to the bonsaiTALK login system, but for now it is unique:

Fantastic idea and a evolving useful tool. Strange choice for a logo, but I don't know the story behind it.

As usual Matt, you keep this the best forum on the net!

Thank you,

Will

Matt, that rocks!! I wish I had some useful information for it I'll be spending a good deal of time there. One thing I must ask though: what is a WIKI?
Thank you for your hard work,
jim

You can read more about Wiki here:

http://wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WhatIsWiki

The cool part about a Wiki is that the content and the structure can both be edited, and it can be done by its users. If you think about it as a big sandbox, you won't be too far off.

Regards,

Matt

Now you can create a link directly to the WIKI from the forum by surrounding a word or phrase with these

[WIKI ]your phrase[/WIKI ]

except don't use the spaces after the word WIKI and before the closing bracket.

Then that will generate a link right to the bonsaiWIKI for the term you used. If there is no entry already there, maybe someone will create it for you!

Regards,

Matt

Just to get a little pedantic....

(This is an encyclopedia, right?)

There are many trees known as buttonwood besides the conocarpus we use in bonsai. So far as I know, none of these others is commonly (There will always be someone. ) used in bonsai

For example, the beginning of the New York Stock Exchange was an agreement known as the "Buttonwood Agreement", signed under a buttonwood tree growing in New York City - certainly not a conocarpus.

(Still in pedant mode, checking Dirr's (Peterson's was no help)):

The above mentioned tree was probably An American Planetree, aka Sycamore, Buttonwood, and Buttonball Tree. Platanus Occidentalis.

I've added this info to Charles' excellent entry.

That's what this is all about. Isn't it?

Hi Bart,

It is an encyclopedia, but being a "Bonsai" encyclopedia, it will be smaller than others, and more focused in its knowledge base.

For example, one of the most common words, "tree," has different contexts outside the ones that might occur to you if you read it anywhere on a bonsai forum. We'll most certainly be ignoring any of those meanings.

Similarly if you say "Buttonwood" to a bonsai fan, it means only one thing. I think the plant you are discussing is actually commonly known as "Buttonwood Tree" But that's like the distinction between a Kiwi Fruit and a bird.

Regards,

Matt
