Exclamation bonsaiTALK Tips #2 Bonsai Chat

The new Forum Chat is up and running.

HOW TO SEE WHO's CHATTING

See that link in the navigation bar at upper right?

1. If it goes yellow, it means that there are one or more people in the chat room
2. At any time you can roll over it and it will tell you who's chatting.
3. The text changes from "Start a Chat" to Join Chat when chat is active.

The new chat runs in Macromedia Flash Player 7+, so if you don't have it, you probably want to download it. It takes just a minute or two even by modem.

HOW TO CHAT

Click on the chat link and a new window will open. You'll be automatically logged in under your username. You might want to test it out before you go to join a scheduled chat.

WHEN TO CHAT

1. You can start a chat anytime you want. You can even start a chat and browse the forum. Turn your speaker up and you'll hear a chime if someone joins in.

2. Scheduled chats

We've held past scheduled chats in the late evening (North American Time) in an attempt to accomodate our European audience. We've had a decent group from North America, but that's still very early in Europe.

I'm thinking now about possibly doing the chats on a Sunday at 10AM Pacific, That works out to about 6PM in the UK

I'll set up a poll with some various options

1. 10AM Pacific - 6PM UK (weekend) not necessarily this Sunday because of the Halloween Holiday

2. Weekday 7PM California , 10PM New York - middle of the night in the UK

Any other suggestions before I add the poll?

Regards,

Matt

Chatroom Feature of New Site

Had a great "chat" with Breefe last night in the Workshop area of the Chatroom.

This gives you a "live" link to others on the forum at the time. Not sure how many of the members know of it - look down to the bottom section of the main page.

Under the "users on line" you will see who if anyone is chatting.

Whenever I look - I had never seen anyone using this feature.
Drop in and say "Hello" - you might be surprised who will join you and where from in the world.

It allows regular users to get to know one another a little better.

Perhaps a group could arrange a regular "meeting time" to discuss various bonsai topics.

Just keep the text clean and be polite please

Hi Ian,

I am glad you are enjoying the chat. Since I'd just recently started a topic on the same subject, I moved your post right in beneath it.

I had a chat myself with Will Heath and Sankastaff on Monday. It became very apparent that I need to do some tweaking to get the colors displaying with good legibility. Currently, there are too many options for backgrounds and so forth, it makes choosing colors that work for everyone rather difficult.

1. I hope some folks will make some suggestions concerning a time for our scheduled chats. When we have the nominations, we'll add a poll and vote and we'll have something going weekly.

2. Impromptu chats are always possible. Remember - when the link at the upper right goes yellow and changes from Start a Chat to Join Chat, somebody is chatting! Roll across the link and find out who, or click the link to join in.

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the details. I missed that initial post - sorry.

Anyway, yes I think this feature will be very interesting in future.

Look forward to "chatting" with you all soon.

Ian.

Poll

10am Pacific - 6PM UK would seem like a good compromise - or even 11am - 7pm.

Set the poll up Matt and go with the flow

Hey, this has grown into a worldwide forum, would it be possible to have a chat for the western side of the world at 10am pst like you stated, and then perhaps have the Aussies host one for their side of the world at a time more covenient for the Easterners?
