Bonsai Tree Index Website

Hello everybody,

I’ve been thinking lately about putting together a website with an index of bonsai trees, or trees in general, with pictures of leaves, flowers, fruits, trunks, and different styles for every tree. My vision is a database of pictures so that people can identify what trees they have and then learn something about them. I was thinking about having pictures of tree diseases, pests and other disorders as well so that people can diagnose their plants. There is a lot of potential for a site like this I think.

I’ve been looking around at bonsaitalk.com to see if there is something like this already. There are a lot of websites out there already, but I don’t feel they are very extensive or well made. There are usually only a couple of pictures or no pictures at all. Most of the sites only describe certain types of trees.

I feel ambitious right now, and I know that it may pour out in the sand, but if I get a lot of support this is something I would like to do. I feel I could learn a lot by just collecting the data.

Questions to you:

Has this been done already?
Is it worth spending the time putting together a site like this?
Would you use it?
Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks,
Robin

Yes, there is already a site about tree id. But it's general tree not specific bonsai information. I think that a website with specific information would be nice.

http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/products/tree/index.html this is the site with general tree info

http://bonsai-bci.com/species/indexgen.html this is the website with information but with no photos.

I think it is worth the while. I find myself asking in the nature what tree is that and if it can be bonsai'd so......

Try to go to something like the first site, i mean identify by ....

Yeah that first site is pretty awesome, but I want to take it a step further...and maybe with bonsais as a focus. It would be nice to see what the trees look like if they grow big too.

I like that first site, it will give me ideas of how to do mine (if I do it).

Thank you so much D3rutat,
Robin

Carmi,

Thanks for that site. It's almost what I had envisioned. You guys are going to make my unemployment very boring. I was almost hoping there were no sites out there so that I could spend my summer indoors programming a bonsai site :)

A combination of D3rutat's http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/products/tree/index.html and your http://www.thebonsaiguide.com would be perfect.

Thanks again Carmi,
Robin

Perhaps you can contact one the bonsai sites that is similar, but not complete, and volunteer your services? You get actual job experience, dont have to pay to maintain the site, and they get your vision and efforts, and the rest of us get the benefit!
