Bonsai theft revisited

Somewhere I saw mention of the idea of embedding one of those pet microchips somewhere in the bark of the growing bonsai! Probably a bit expensive for the odd newbie ficus but probably an idea for a valuable specimen, but only really if it came to identifying it in court!

Re: Bonsai theft revisited

The problem with this kind of theft is not Identifying but finding.
It seems to me that some kind of remote tracking device is what is called for.
A micro transmitter with the ability to switch on and track with satalite is not imopssible and would solve the problem completly.
On older and more valuable items your transmitter could be sealed into a waterproof unit and potted into the bottom of the root ball.
If your tree disapears you have the unit turned on and track it down, case solved.
They are already doing this with trucks and autos.
Sooner or later costs will come down to where we can do it with our better trees. Or at least the one tree in your collection that you feel would be the most likely to be stollen.

Re: Bonsai theft revisited

Hi Rip,

I found a few links on stolen bonsai and security and put those in the bonsaiTALK Links folder under Misc->Security

Recently, one of the gardens was putting in some kind of security system with the new display. I didn't get many details, but I think they epoxied magnets to the bottom of the pots and mounted reed switches in the display benches. Reed switches are inexpensive magnetically actuated switches. Just two strips of iron in a glass envelope. When a magnet (glued to the bottom of the pot) comes near, the contacts close and stay closed as long as the pot is in place.

This way, if a pot gets pulled from a bench, (or a wire gets cut) the circuit will open up and an alarm can be actuated.

I think this system is very practical and fairly inexpensive. It probably works best if no one knows that it's even there.

Regards,

Matt
