Bonsai Talk Useage Numbers Revisited

OK.... every few months I get a kick out of 'doing the math' and coming up with these figures. They probably show nothing but they may be of interest to some. The last time before today that I did this was September 4,2003.

members on 1/4/04 1613 on 9/7/03 1400 - 213 new members
threads on 1/4/04 4923 on 9/7/03 4077 - 846 new threads
posts on 1/4/04 41,319 on 9/7/03 33,074 - 8245 new posts

on 9/4/03 41% of the posts were from the top 10 posters
on 1/7/04 39% were from the top 10

We have 45 members with over 200 posts and 87 with over 100... on 9/7 there were 66 members with over 100 posts.

Of the 1613 members as of this post, 831 have chosen not to post at all.

What does this all mean....... I still will leave it up to you. But perhaps in another 3 to 4 months I will do it again....

Hope you enjoy!

Do you have anything to say?

Jay

Well, lets have a modified statistician take a crack -- we're getting busier, but we don't know at what rate. The 80/20 rule holds for another instance - 20% of the universe does 80% of the activity -- 50% join and than do nothing -- same as most voluntary orgs.

Well, I'm one of those 'low post number' members. I visit every day at lunch to catch up on the discussions and learn, but rarely post (49 posts to date).

I suppose the reason is that I still consider myself and EXTREME novice (bonsai since late summer 2000). I don't like responding to a thread unless I actually have something worthwhile to add.

So I suppose one stat I'd be interested in seeing is how often the members that are not active posters visit the site.

Maybe the silent majority enjoy reading and believe in the old adage, " if you can't improve on what is being said, keep your big mouth shut!"

Hi, Carl.

The variant I know (and, unfortunately, ignore too frequently) is:

'Tis better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubts."

I am sure people use what they read here to good use. There are a lot of people who may not feel they have a valid question or are intimidated by the more knowledgable users here.

Well the purpose of my post is NOT to try and get more people to post. You will post if you want and have something to say. I do the 'math' for myself and share it every few months.....and no I'm not an Accountant, just interested in the statistics.

Hey for most of us (forgive me if you're in the Southern half of the Globe or in a tropical area) our trees are sleeping and we got to find something to do

You can grow tropical or sub tropicals in the northern hemisphere... There are some of us "nuts" that enjoy this hobby year 'round!

IMO the postings of the board have slowed down quite a bit because of winter. I can't wait until spring to see everyone start posting again.
