Bonsai stuff near Los Angeles

I'm going to be in and around LA for the next 5 days, and I suspect there should be a nursery or collection in the area that I might be able to visit. In particular, if anyone could direct me toward something very close to LA that might be open on a Sunday, or something vaguely near Santa Paula, or between Santa Paula and LA, for Monday, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

There are several good bonsai nurseries. You might try googling The Huntington Library bonsai collection and Japanese garden. It is supposed to be a good exhibit (I've never seen it) but they've been doing some remodeling so I don't know if its open.

If you use the search tool on this web site and type in "Bonsai nurseries Los Angeles" you will find specific nurseries along with photos.

Ah yes, thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Barry. With the help of Al's excellent road trip article, I have three nurseries to hit tomorrow (after calling to see if they're open on Sundays) on the way from LAX to my hotel, and one to see on Monday, as well. Thanks Barry and Al for the help.

Just an FYI . . . I was recently in LA and looked for bonasi. I called most of the nurseries from "Al's road trip" and the only one which was open and/or still in business was Chikugo-En in Gardena. I definitely would make the effort to stop there . . . . and at an ATM before you get there. He doesn't take plastic and I'm certain you will see something that catches your eye.

Hi everybody, Jersanct, on Sunday (today) there are some nurseries open. If you can make it to almost Orange County, then you should check out the House of Bonsai at 5214 Palo Verde Ave, Lakewood, CA (phone 562-804-688. They have some good imported trees from Korea. Don't get any bonsai soil there though. This place closes on Monday. Just a few minutes away from this nursery, there's another good nursery for some affordable juniper stock material for souvenir to bring home. I will PM you as soon as I find the address.
Good luck!
Si

Gary was nice enough to point me to the bank across the street for ATM usage. But still plan ahead in case your purchases exceed a single card daily withdraw limit.

If you call Gary and let him you know you are from out of town and only have Monday he will more than likely open up for you for a visit. Really nice people with outstanding material. Wish I would have bought more stuff...

It's funny - I didn't see most of these messages before I landed at LAX, but I was fortunate enough to make Chikugo-En my one stop on the way to the hotel. At check-out time, I found myself frantically going through my pockets in the hopes of finding that some large chunks of cash had magically appeared in them, before Gary sent me, too, across the street to the ATM.

I purchased two beautiful shohin pots, a larger oval pot, and one of their many Shimpaku junipers, to be delivered to its new, much colder home in a few days. Fairly poor phone-generated photos attached.

Thanks to everyone for the good advice.

Chris
