Looks like you guys had fun. A couple of questions for Matt or anyone that knows on Dougs bonsai. What are those wire loops around the trees, anti theft devices? Electronic wrist busters if you go to pick one up.

When you are grafting hundreds of saplings like this what happens when one here and there dies before the graft is complete? Will the adjacent saplings eventually bridge the gap? It seems that some dieback would be inevitable.

This kind of thing isn't for everybody but I think he's doing some great work and pushing the boundries which in my opinion is good for bonsai.

I believe the wire loops are a sort of watering device...though they very well could be an anti-theft thing as well.

Ahh, I didn't think of that. I don't see any emitters but it may be regular soaker hose.

Those black rings are in fact soaker tubing. You can see them in one of those ads that pops up around here from time to time.

When one of the saplings dies out, it may be necessary to replace it. You can find out more at Doug's website:
