Question Bonsai Plant Location...is My Location Going To Kill My Plants?

It appears as though I do not have a suitable place to protect my
bonsai from the weather and summer sun.

My arrangement unfortunately leaves me with only a south-eastern exposure on a concrete patio/walkway along the base of a light colored stucko wall.

Yuck.

I have toyed with a couple of ideas...

Raise the plants off the walkway. (plant stands or a plank) this would only give me a limited distance from the walking surface, and no distance from the wall.

Put bamboo fencing along the wall to reduce the heat and light reflection.
(Ugly. The wife will probably hate that idea.)

Put a roll up shade in front of the area in question.
(Also ugly..the wife will probably hate that idea as well, plus I may not be able to arrange it.)

My big question is this though:
Has anybody used the product called Cloud Cover? Any reasons why it might, or might not work?

I think it might be my only hope, even if it is less desirable than having the "right location," which we all would agree is the best option.

I do have the option of removing the plants to a more protected location under extreme weather conditions, but that would be a limited option. i.e. only on the hottest and stormiest bay area days could I get away with it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Can you plant a tree, build an attractive trellis or awning? Can you put a couple eyebolts in the fence or eaves and string wire runners for some shadecloth?

Cloud cover is ok - it reduces transpiration by covering the leaf surfaces and pores (stomata), but it won't stop them from baking in the heat.

You may get some ideas by looking in the ***MUSEUM***
in the My Benches & Growing Area folder

Regards,

Matt

Update

To my surprise, my lovely wife was more compliant to the above metioned ideas than I thought she'd be. That will help a lot.

The shade cloth idea is great, and probably workable as well. Your suggestions opened up some more ideas for me. The combination of keeping the pots off the concrete surface, reducing the heat and light reflection off the wall, and plain old blocking the sun from hitting the area as much as possible might be enough. That, coupled with moving the plants on very extreme heat days and/or being careful to water early in the morning on those hot days might do the trick.

I hope!

I have never paid much attention to Cloud Cover before, but I don't like the idea of blocking the stomata, gas exchange is just too important.

Matt, thank you for taking the time to reply. I've wanted to get into bonsai for a long time, and though my arrangements may not be ideal right now, I think I might be able to get away with a small collection by exercising some creativity.

Thanks to BonsaiTalk,
Steve
