Bonsai in NY?

Hi all! I am new to the forums and the hobby, presently nururing some potensai to prepare as bonsai in a few years. I'm at the stage where I really would like to talk to someone and see some genuine trees!

So,

1. Anyone know of a good nursery or store where I can find good stock in the NYC metro area?

2. Anyone know of any societies or groups in NYC?

Any help is much appreciated. I live in the Bronx and don't have regular access to a car, so I'm wishing there to be a society in Manhattan...

Thanks,
~Paul

Paul,
If I was in NY City area I would head straight for the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and start asking my questions there.

At one time they were about the only source of information for American bonsai. I am talking about the 1950's and early 1960's. And I am sure someone will comment about my comment. However when in the hinterlands trying to find out about growing bonsai, their two small books were one of the only printed information about growing bonsai in this country.

You won't waste your time going there. Give us a report after you visit, it would be interesting.

Excellent suggestion. I've been meaning to get out there for a while... I'll make it a point to visit after the holidays.

Check out the NY listings on the American Bonsai Society page:

Apparently there isn't a club in the Bronx, but there are in Queens and Staten Island. I'm sure if you call either one or both, they can be of great help to you.

Bonsai in NYC

Paul,

I grew up in the Bronx and moved to New Rochelle when I married. If you can grub a ride from someone it's worh the trip to Shanti Bithi in Stanford, CT. Their trees are way over priced but you will enjoy the experience of seeing all the great matreila they have Also don't forget the Bronx Botanical Gardens. i moved upstate 4 years ago and revsited the Gardens last month on a trip back down to see friends. It's a great place and I'm sure you can find some outlets if you talk to the people there. Approach the City Parks Dept. also. They do alot of work at Van Cortland Park and maybe you can get some of the older trees they dig up and throw out in the Spring, same for the Broxn Botanical. Never know what you can find. Good luck.
