Bonsai And Hurricane Preparation
I was wondering what those of you with many, many trees do in inclement weather, like isabel and her cousins.
Do you bring your trees indoors? |

In Japan, they tie the trees down to the benches for protection against severe winds and earthquakes.
We don't get much weather here, so I can't provide any direct experience for you. If the rain goes on for more than a couple days it is a good idea to tilt the pots and support them so that they drain more freely. Also, salt water can be carried by the wind in big storms, so it may be prudent to water throughly afterwards to leach some of it out. Regards, Matt

Jim Smith who lives in florida has some problems with that. He has way too many trees to do anything with them. He said he puts his best ones inside and then he prays.

I'm in Galveston TX, 6 blocks off the beach...
I have bungee cords for the trees on monkey poles. If very high winds are expected I move them onto the ground. I'm behind a sea wall (12') so flooding is typically due to rain accumulation. I.e., high tide, the storm sewers are full, and nowhere for the rain water to go... If we were a direct target of a hurricane or on the rotation side of the land fall, meaning tidal surges, flood waters would probably be sea water, I'd move my best trees into the 2nd floor of the house. The remaining stock in development would go in my lower floor on my work benches which would flood but hopefully 3' is high enough. Everything not in those categories are on their own... Jim Stone |

The fact that I am on an outer banks of Absecon Island, I moved all my outdoor trees into my garage on Cinderblocks covered plywood, putting them about 8 inches from the floor. My tropical and sub tropicals went into my green house... We do get flooding, but this time we were spared.
Here's a picture of the interior of the garage

Not to beat a dead horse (Isabel), but she was good enough to pass us by.
I am exhausted , but all my trees are back outdoors in this glorious Fall weather. I hope all of you out there in Internet land were as lucky as me.
