Bonsai Galleries?

This may be a suggestion, or it may exist, I'm not sure. I'd like to see a bonsai gallery that can be searched by tag. Meaning, if I put in boxwood and broom, I would see all pictures with those two tags. Instead of having to wade through each member's gallery, or a show's gallery, have something that's a bit more search oriented for those looking for inspiration for their tree. These forum galleries are nice, but are not full-featured and usually restrict photos based on file size. If the person took a 1600x1200 photo, then I'd love to see it in that kind of detail. A full-featured standalone gallery where people could upload freely would be able to handle that easily.

You can search the galleries by keyword. When you are in the gallery, hit "search the gallery" and then you have all sorts of parameters to use. If the person uploading the photo used your keyword, you will find the tree.

As far as size... size is money. The space to store those big photos would be expensive.

I'm not so sure about the money part. With modern technology, space is incredibly cheap. Portable hardrives run about $100 for 250gbs. That is alot of space and several of those would be more than enough for housing high resolution photos. As far as the search engine is concerned i second this proposition. Learning from different subjects by visuals is essential to progressing your own knowledge. I am not much of an ITS guy, but i don't think it would be terribly difficult to put into place.

Well, you wouldn't use a portable hard drive in this case, but your on the right track. Web space is very cheap these days, with 1 terabyte of space costing $5-$20 a month. I could set one up that would let everyone upload at least a 1600x1200 picture easily, but I'd rather not get into it. I have enough to deal with on my own forums, blogs, and sites. I thought someone might have already done this, since it seems that pictures of bonsai are just as important as words about bonsai.

Great ideas, Guys. Maybe email TREEBAY (Matt), make your suggestion and mention willingness to donate a sum specific to those additions.

There are over 7,000 photos in the gallery, and we have almost 20,000 members. Only a vanishingly small percentage of those members donate to the forum.

Space may be cheaper than it used to be, but there is a LOT of archived information on this forum, you are only seeing the tip of a very big iceberg underneath the surface.

It always amazes me, how much is actually here if you just look for it.

I am an IT Guy, and you are correct that disk space is cheap if you are buying it for yourself. What is not cheap is renting the space on a server in some large Server Farm / Datacenter as Matt does here with BonsaiTalk.

This Website is on a hosted server and Matt has to pay for the hosting costs and the Bandwidth used.
Yes he can increase the disk space allocated to the site at cost, and yes he can increase the bandwidth limits as well, but both cost "Real Dollars"

If Size limits were doubled, then the immediate cost to run the this site would almost be double as well.

If You want to host Large format pictures of your trees, then I suggest that you start your own Blog / website and link to them here as does Walter Pall and others
