MikeP,

The honor would be mine. You pick out the picture and let me know in a pm or something what I need to get to you to make this happen.Shipping cost, materials etc..Thank you!

Joaine,

I see what you mean.I just don't want anyone to think I would be selling something like this. Not really about having pics of 'famous trees',more like the idea of a person having a poster of a sports car or something along those lines. You have gotten to part of the point of why I think of this,I myself cannot yet get out to take a picture of trees with someone like Boon,Noelanders etc.. .By listing these artist names I don't mean to put somebody on spot or make anyone feel obligated to send me anything.

Red pine,
I believe that you will find most of the folks who do "professional" bonsai (aka tour, do workshops, maintain collections, etc.) seem to be willing, in many cases more than willing to, to provide "autographs" to those who have participated in an event. I would be willing to bet that if you sent them a picture of one of their trees that they would be happy to sign and return it. The exceptions, I imagine, would be few and far between.

John

Every artist should have a stack of 8x10's ready.

Not to be a wet blanket, but there is money to be made in the "autograph biz."

This all depends on what you have in mind for the photo. Is it a souvenir, or are you looking to do a little more? You've said that they're for you and that's terrific. Good for you.

There is a small, but growing market for auto'ed bonsai stuff. It's not a big deal, but it's there. Signed copies of Bonsai Techniques go for more than unsigned. I have a book signed by Saburo Kato, John Naka and Kimura that I bought a few years back for more than what the regular book would bring. Thought it would be kind of "cool" to have the mojo of those signatures.

This kind of thing is hard to pin down and can wind up (in larger markets and hobbies) hurting some people. What was once a courtesy by a sports star, artist, or whoever, has become a for-profit service with a back market that can turn alot of the people signing stuff off. For instance, professional skateboader Tony Hawk hesitates to sign skateboard decks for kids because the minute after he signs, some show up on Ebay for triple the price of an unsigned board. He wised up that he was not only being taken advantage of, he was losing money ;-)

I hardly think that kind of thing this is about to happen with bonsai, but you are relying on the goodwill of artists to do a favor for you out of their love of the hobby. Don't wear out your welcome...

Hi,

Yeah I guess every 'thing' will have it's black market, using monkey claws to make ash trays, people shooting one another over Air Jordans',over priced items on ebay etc.. .

The way MikeP and I have set this one up is he is sending me a collectable pic and I am sending a couple bucks out to support the forum. This is a cool thing.

autographed items only hold a value on the market if they are not personalized. ask the artist to write To (your name) and then sign it and it is worth nothing to anyone else. i learned that with baseball(s). most people who's autograph is sought after will do that because they don't want to lose the profit, ie. autograph signings at which you pay a fee, then they still fill it out to you so there is no resale interest.

MikeP and RedPine, that's a great idea! Would you be willing to sell a few more, Mike?

I wouldn't ever sell it, so you could make mine out "To Joanie"! Personalization means more than a profit, to me.

Everyone wins.... the forum gets a nice donation, the artist and their tree get more exposure, and the aspiring bonsaiist has something to enjoy in a frame on the wall, when they can't be out with their trees.

Hey Will,

Just for you, I shall take one of my wife and I at the potters wheel, you know - just like Demi and Patrick.

Oh no, there again, there could be a huge demand which that might outsell the pots. Well, at least the wife looks good - i'll hide round the back.

Regards,
Ian.

Okay, I'll take one! (Even if you have to be in it)
