Bonsai autographs
Hello,
An idea I had been thinking was bonsai artist autographs for personal collecting. The idea was to use a picture of a favorite tree from an artists'.Then have it printed out on a nice quality glossy paper and then have the artist sign it with a sharpie and mail it back in my S.A.S.E. .Anyone done anything like this or know how to best go about it? Thanks.

That's a fun idea, but first of all how would you get the picture of the tree? Pictures on the internet are copyrighted, it wouldn't be a good idea to print them out... besides, the quality would be pretty bad. You can take the picture yourself, or ask someone else to do it...
If someone who goes to a lot of conventions and shows would shoot these pictures and market them, that might work. But can you take a picture of some else's tree and make money from it? Interesting, Red Pine. Worthy of some thought. Joanie

Well I was thinking the artist themselves may already know where to find a pic of their tree. The problem with quality may be an issue indeed,it would need look neat and be good enough for a frame.Mike page,Walter Pall,Nick Lenz etc.. all have online pics of thier trees. But getting a quality picture of one of their trees good enough to sign and display for them to be willing to autograph yeah I don't know how to go about this.

No, I know you weren't. But to have someone take the pictures, they would want a good reason to do so. And they might want to be paid.
Here's another idea... buy a book with lots of good pictures in it, of good trees. Full page pictures if possible. Then carefully cut out the pages and send them to be autographed. Mat and frame those pictures. I've seen that done with childrens book illustrations, etc. Joanie

When I visited Jim Smith this spring I asked him to pose for a photo of the twoo of us. He happily agreed.
Latter when I got home and had the pic developed I wrote(by hand) a letter, thanking him for showing me around his nursery and inviting my to his home to view his personal collection. I sent 2 copies of the pic and the letter to him, not knowing if I overstepped a boundary or something. About a month latter a recieved an envelope from him. Inside was one of the pic autographed by him to me, and also a large pic of the tree that we were standing next to. What an honor. I do not know if every bonsai artist would do such a thing, but he did. I now proudly display the framed picture in my living room. Eeryone that comes over (that are not into bonsai) asks me who that is. And I tell them the story of my visit to Jim Smiths. attached is the pic he signed. I would really hope that people will not bother all of the artists they see with such a request, OR TRY TO MAKE MONEY from this. That would be a shame to all in bonsai.

RedPine, I'm flattered that you would want a picture of one of my trees, and would be happy to send you one. Mike

Learning the mechanics of bonsai is a matter of rote. Over and over again the processes are practiced until the hands and eyes know the moves. Learning the art of bonsai may be more like water wearing away a stone, or climbing a mountain where the peak is always shrouded in fog and just out of reach. Persist, and someday you may see the peak in sunshine. You may pick up the stone and it's a thing of beauty. MP@BBB Studio |

Nice story Midwest.
I don't think one could really pedal bonsai autographs, they would have to be massed produced for a seller to turn a profit. And to stop such a thing the artist would only need to not sign a thousand copies for the same asker.

I wasn't suggesting that people make money off of the artists... Let me explain a little further the thought process....
First, if you can go to the artist's house, or to a show or convention yourself, then you can take the picture and have it signed and that's great! No need to ask anyone else to help you, no need to buy anything special. But how many artists let you come to their homes or gardens? How many artists with famous trees? But RedPine, let's say, can't get to the big conventions himself either. He needs someone else to take the picture. How is he going to convince someone to do that?? Most people these days are taking digital pictures, which really don't print, blow up, or last very well. (When my friend got married, all her pictures were digital, and while the prints looked great... the photographer warned her that they won't last, especially if displayed. So she also received a disk of the images for posterity) So you would need a person with a good old film camera taking the pictures especially for you. Now, RedPine specifically said that he wanted pictures of famous trees. How many famous trees show up each year? It would take several shows or conventions to have a nice collection. So, my thought was that someone might decide to market a set of pictures of famous trees. Of course they would need permission, see what I meant? You can't take pictures of trees on display and just sell the pictures, can you? But it's like the magazines or book authors taking pictures... they are making money. They obviously get permission. It promotes the artists, enriches their business, and gives them exposure. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, it is more akin to artists or conventions making the enamel pins. Something collectible that people buy, something that promotes them. Joanie
