Bonsai in art

I was sitting reading the forums today. Scrolling through some posts about whether bonsai was art and the debates that followed. And my artistic background started churning. When we say something is bonsai are we talking about the special growth and care of a tree or are we talking about an art form. One that creates a tree with allusions to a setting and nature. I guess basically i'm asking, am i creating bonsai if i take a block of maple wood and carve a bonsai in it. Would it be wrong to sculpt a clay bonsai tree and then display is with a 3 point display?

My thoughts are that i am still creating bonsai, even though i am using different mediums. In a painting of a bonsai, branch placement, trunk taper and size, and all the other aspects of bonsai are involved. So essentially am i not creating bonsai? I am certainly going to follow the rules or bonsai. Or it wouldn't be a bonsai.

I am using the same philosphies as well. Surely i'm not going to create a life sized bonsai sculpture in a day. I can't even pump out a bonsai drawing in a day and have it be something beautiful. So taking my time and nurturing the piece are a must.

Bottom line: Must bonsai be a living tree?
Thoughts? idea?

I would have to say yes. Does the plant have to be a tree like a pine, elm, maple, etc.? No. There are bonsai made from azalea's, boxwood, and the like which are all shrubs.
The commonality is that they are live plants whether tree or no.

The word "bonsai" literally means "tree-tray", not paintings, or sculptures of trees that have the same appearance as bonsai. However, paintings have inspired bonsai, such as the bunjin style. Good thoughts though...and not a bad question. It is good to question what you do from every angle so that you know exactly what it is you are doing.

Love it! That's hilarious...I think we all have some of those dead one's at some point in our bonsai past (or present).

All in fun,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,

The beauty is, you don't need to water it, feed it, wire it, prune it, and you get to see the tree in its winter form all year round - its a win win situation, you know it makes sense

Warmest regards,

Aaron

If the bonsai is dead, it's firewood.

It is generally believed and taught that a tree must be alive to be displayed as a bonsai understanding that much in the mainline arena of judging such events places a great deal of importance on the health of the tree, therefore it must be alive. As to bonsai being art? I believe it is and using the definitions of how art is defined today where a bowel movement sealed in a mason jar is passed off as art. If that is not enough, a major museum purchased said item for around $5000.00. If you can tell me how this is art and bonsai is not I will give up bonsai and go buy a couple of packets of Exlax.
