Blue Spruce??

I know its a smackable offense, but the infamous home depot has some nice looking blue spruce. They have nice taper and some decent nebari, I forgot to peek at the root system, though. How well do they work as bonsai? I could only find one pic here (Robuku's), is there a reason for their unpopularity? BTW, nice tree, Robuku!
Its a popular shrub in my area, so I figure it'll grow nicely, but will it look good?
Thanks in advance,
jim

jimmy, there are a couple i have seen at ne bonsai, they make a nice looking tree. i have seen them at home depot also for anywhere between $5-50, so i say, if you have a few bucks to spare, why not try it out.

Jim -
Spruce has proven to be a frustrating species for me. The reason that I tend not to choose spruce for a bonsai subject is that I have wired and rewired and rewired and get little result for all the wiring. The spruce tends to bounce back to its original form after the wire is removed.
That being said, I have seen nice spruce that look fine without any wire training at all.
Bonsai West in Littleton, MA has a nice signature forest group of Alberta Spruce at the gated entrance that has been there for many years. The primary maintenance task for this group is finger pruning. (You probably did not know that spruce had fingers. )

Candy - Ha ha...I quite liked that one.

Jim - Smackable offence? hey - sometimes they just make it impossible for you to not buy the stuff, even though it's totally against your purchasing principles.

I think that spruce, in general, are a pretty mixed bunch - and I've yet to have one grow well. I get the impression they really appreciate high humidity.

They can grow really sloooowly too....

I found a nice photo at the Idianapolis Bonsai Club :

The ones I've found already have some nice shape, so maybe I can get away with just some permanently attached weights to counteract the springyness....or if they grow that slowly I'll give'em a good wiring.
They've attracted me mainly because I have problems seeing the tree in the shrub with mughos and junipers and spruce have a huge choice of branches.
Jerry, you've found an amazing example.
My boss ducked out on paying me this week, so I'll snag one on Monday. That worthless peice of.........
thanks to all,
jim
