Black Hills Spruce Group

After we did the Rocky Mountain Juniper , we worked on a small Black Hills Spruce group of five trees.

These, the RMJ, and a Black Hills Spruce that I will post in another thread, all came from Andy Smith's Golden Arrow Bonsai

For those interested in collecting, his web site is a real trip.

This photo is the "before" (kinda).

Last fall, when I got the group home, we set out to correct a bad bend (an "L") near the base of one of the trees. Not having any rebars around, I used a piece of aluminum angle extrusion. This had the advantage of having a nice "v" that would hold the trunk securely.

I then bent the trunk down so as to straighten out the "L", and let the tree sit for the winter. The plan was that then all I would need to do was adjust the planting angle. I used hose clamps near the base where forces were high, and a simple velcro garden tape to secure the upper end.

(Those who know me will know that I discuss all such things with my sensei, Chase Rosade.)

You can't miss the trunk with its support piece in this photo.

We repotted into a slightly larger pot and chose the new front, rotating the group about 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

We elected NOT to wire the branches until later in the summer.

This photo was taken before we had done any clean up of the branches.

There was some adjusting of spacing and bend on two of the trunks. I will try to get decent photos and post the details later.

(As you can see in the photo, Chase had just gotten in a major shipment of mica pots.)
