Big trunk chop time

I have an Amur maple that I planted bare root in my yard last spring. It grew well, sending out two feet of growth that season. Is it safe to do a trunk chop on this tree this spring ? This is a large, 12 foot tree with a 6 inch trunk. Here is a picture, the tree flares nicely under the soil. Thanks for your help and comments.

Wow look at the trunk on that!
If it were mine, I would progessivly "chop" the tree down to the last couple of branches. And repeat throughout several years.
This will force the tree to produce buds further down the trunk, util they are at you desired hieght.
I have heard that Amur maple can/will die back after a branch chop, so make sure to leave a few inches infront of the disired chop location.
Hope this helps

Amur maples can handle a dry chop like that if you have the timing right. Early spring abought a week before bud stirring I would make my chop choose a leader after growth begins then not fuss with it again until the following year.
