Best time of year for approach graft

I have an Eastern White Pine heeled into a bed in my yard that I will be lifting/potting when the ground thaws. Its got a great trunk with movement and taper but will need approach grafts to form well placed branches. When is the best time of year to perform this procedure on EWP, and pines in general. I plan on allowing the tree to recover for a year or more before attempting this. Thanks,

Dave

Generally, early spring is the best time to carry out any grafting procedure, but in the case of the approach graft almost any time the tree is growing is possible. You are not dealing with a seperated free standing scion that my die if the graft is not done at exactly the right time. Understanding that the approach graft can stay in place attatched to it parent branch, for as long as it takes to strike successfully, timing is not as critical an issue. It is important that you place cambium to cambium in order for this to work.
