OK.. sounds like there is a desire for two contests

Lets firm up the rules in the next day or two
We can set a time frame for purchase as October 25th through November 11th. That gives you three weekends to shop. No receipts necessary, we will just trust each other. The $20 US is still the limit. Pictures will be needed for November 27th...that gives you 16 days to style your tree and get the pictures.... will this work?

Winner will be......... anyone who enters

people's choice

Hey, I was thinking that you could go kind of people's choice on the judging of the contest and put things to a vote. You could then have a couple few categories, as well. I would like to see who can find the cheapest, non-discounted bonsai-able tree, for example. If you just put it up as a poll once you get the entries (you could even things up by disassociating names and trees this way, too...), then put a time limit on the voting, we could get all democratic about it. Just a suggestion, feel free to do it or not...

People's choice sounds like a good idea to me...

Here is a picture of the top. This is a lotus pot, brand new from China, dark brown unglazed and the inside dimensions are..
12 in by 10 1/2 in by 4 in deep.
I will donate the pot to whomever is chosen the best overall design.
The winner must designate shipping method and pay shipping costs.
I am only donating one pot so you all will have to choose who gets it.

Jay, as for your original question. I think I would go with a hick's yew. They sell 3-4 gallon trees around here for under $20. They'll usually have suckers on the base of the trunk that can be pruned off so the trunks have some taper to them already. You can't make instant bonsai out of these but there's so many branches to choose from that you'll get a good start on the basic shape once the excess is pruned away.

So, I'm guessing these time limits are for the people below equator.
But, I'm curious why there has to be a "starting from" day. I mean, if for exemple Jules has bought a nice juniper last week, she hasn't done anything to it yet and she'd like to participate with it, why couldn't she?

Ofcourse I'm asking this because here you can't find any good stuff in April or so. We get our garden stock in May usually so it's kinda hard for me to even think of participating.

Just some thoughts.
Zeb
