Move to sunny California... nah.. just kidding. Maybe we should save this for the spring. Most nurserys are pretty slim pickens right now anyway.

I would love to participate, but, you are right, nursery choices are very slim now, especially in our small town. Al, can you remember to remember this in the spring. It would be a great exercise.

Southern hemisphere

Jls and some of the others who are down under could start now as there spring is just getting under way.
This forum is global so we can watch trees being created wherever the growing season is active.

OK a contest in the spring, say April, sounds great. Al, if you do not remember I will attempt to remember. I think we should set down the guidelines (rules) in advance. As you said, Al, it can be any nursery, even one you know. The price of the entry must be the full price, no discounts to get it under the $20.00. We do not want you bringing into the contest a $100 tree broken off and sold at 80% off. The nursery should have several of these types of trees ( it is a normal tree for sale here). The price of the tree is up to $20.00. We will not include in the price tax or shipping, so you can buy it on line if you choose....not really picking it out that way but.... If you're in another country, convert the $20 US to your currency and go to it! Any type tree is OK. Before and after pictures are necessary. No tree presently in your collection can be entered. You may buy as many trees as you like, but you may enter only one! The tree need not be presented in a Bonsai pot. You must develop the tree with its future in mind, no dumb attempts killing the tree but makeing it look 'cool'!

OK some parts of the world may have cheaper trees of type X or Y, some local currency may allow better value of purchase.... So what, this will be for fun and enjoyment.

Any corrections to the rules Does anyone have a good way to judge? Or, do we really have to?

I definately like the idea of this contest next spring. I was actually planning on doing the exact same thing. I've read enough about styling that while I have lots of plants growing larger trunks, etc, I'd like to see if I can't handle styling something to look halfway decent "now". So I was planning on buying a few cheap trees next spring and trying my first styling.

I'm definately game. I was looking at all the Juniper a few weeks ago, discounted to 6 bucks in each gallon pot.. was so tempting to grab a few and see what I could do.

i cant wait....thanks all for the cabin fever...

..I say we have two contests, one for the folks below the equator going into their spring now, and perhaps folks like Jose could go in on that one as well....his choice however to partake and in either contest....

We should modify any rules quickly for those in Oz and again south of the equator...

Show of reciept neccessary? Or just a comparable material is ok?
It would be ez to tell I am sure.....

STP.....good Idea about the calender.....top twelve could be in it. tho seasonal pix would be cool too. You dont see too many American calendars with Bonsai.

Matt...there is a million dollar idea for you...

here is an example of a 20 dollar shrub (Barberry) I got at a local nursery

Oh, one more thing. I'd really like it if people could post a few pics, starting, and then some during styling, and then the end result. I've learned a lot from just reading people's pictures & such as they've styled their trees (Bonsaial does it a lot, thanks a ton). I just think it's a great opportunity to watch other artists at work.
