Beamers
This is a hornbeam that I bought at El Dorado bonsai last Fall.
I bought it because of the way the trunk had two cool curves down low. The top was straight as an arrow and I would cut this off. I planned to make a shohin tree from it. The tree started 14 inches tall with a 2 inch trunk. You can just make out the faint felt tip lines on the trunk wher I will chop the trunk. I had planned to do it in two stages.

Re: Beamers
I made the first chop at the top line in Dec. I cut the root off also that was at the bottom left. Later in Feb. I decided to cut it to the second line. I figured why wait a whole year. Cut it now and let it sprout. They grow like weeds anyway. Why be so cautious?

Re: Beamers
Hi Al,
The base of that tree sets up some big expectations. Carnac sees an air layer in your future... I think a couple of nice shohin could result. Here's what it might have looked like if they had chopped it a little earlier. Whoah! Just saw your second & third posts. Sounds like we are on the same bonsai wavelength... Ommmmmmmmmmm.

Re: Beamers
Well heres the little dude now, all sprouten its little branches. About three years will produce a nice tree. BTW both the chops were dusted with hormones and planted in fine akadama. They are pushin there fourth set of leaf nodes. I am quite positive that they have roots already. These will make very tiny bonsai indeed. 1 inch trunks 2" tall.

Re: Beamers
Speaking of air layers, heres a project that I will tackle next year. I am up to my jockeys in projects this year already. This ugly beamer will be air layered at the mark. The tree is 15" tall and 4" at the base. It will be about 2 1/2 at the layer junction and about 6 inches tall. Should make a dandy shohin.

Re: Beamers
Al,
All of your trees are great! I love shohin bonsai and also group plantings including saikei. What do you think about saikei? Maybe you have one (or two or...) ? If so, please post a picture of it. You're to be one of the best bonsaiists here, on my opinion at least. In the same group with Matt. Keep on growing!
