Banyan Style Bonsai
Hello all....I'm a total newbie at this, but I was wondering if I could get some advice on where and how to start a bonsai that would have that incredible banyan tree look Thanks!

A couple great banyon style trees are all of the ficus species, as well as scheffelera. I especially like the ficus salicifolia for banyon style.
To make a banyon tree the width of the tree must be about 2 times the height. Causing a canopy to be very wide and short like this will create humidity underneath the foliage and trick the tree into thinking that it is moist enough to drop roots. As the roots drop get rid of the ones in the wrong spots and string the ones you keep through a straw and put the straw into the ground causing the root to grow unharmed. In a little while after the root reaches the ground cut the straw off. I would reccomend joining a bonsai club and getting used to bonsai before trying this though.

At the risk of violation some copyright.... I think this is a nice example of banyan style ficus.

i'm not too fond of that one. i dont really like the super thick foliage. makes it look like a carpet. i'm not crazy about the bunch of roots on the (our) left side, and the abscense of many aerial roots all around. i like a banyan to have many aerial roots, since that is the defining characteristic of the banyan style. the superthick aerial root on our right side, just next to the trunk, looks out of place to me. |

One rule in banyon is that there is not much space between pads. Plus Nick you are arguing with one of the best artists, Jim Smith. That tree has a price tag of 25,000 dollars. If you ever get a chance to see it in real life (i have several times) you will see what an amazing tree this is.
It is 36" tall and 60" wide. It has a trunk diameter of 10". This is one of the specimens you only see on rare occasion. You might like this tree better since it has more arial roots.
