Bald Cypress- Virtuals Wanted

I picked up this bald cypress a little while ago for $300 from Mary Madison. I am planning to take the hollowed out center and turn that a little to the left then tilt the tree on the left side allowing the foliage to go back in a weeping style reverse slant type way.

Here is the first picture. It is where the hollowed out center is facing you-

Honestly, I think you are risking trying to style a cypress like a juniper...

They don't really twist back upon themselves like that. Even if blown over they tend to grow back upright. While there's always the exception, it might be more believable if you think in terms of a slanting/weeping style. Move the head on your virtual to the left and see what you think.

Here's sort of what I had in mind...

You can also have it weeping down the left side more...

The more I look at your trunk, however, the more I wonder if the tree is not best left the way the base is indicating- upright.

Am I not seeing something that indicates the root base would look better with a changed planting angle?

Hi Charles,

I really like the front shown in your first photo. It has so much interest, what with the hollow trunk and associated bumps and lumps(it also has the least inverse taper... ). IMHO it would make a stunning sumo-type bonsai if you left it upright. Your choice of course, you can see the tree in the flesh and I can only see it on a screen.

Regards,

TB / Chris.

Well, here is another juniper looking virtual (sorry but I just can't seem to like the natural cypress look ). I tilted over to try to alleviate the reverse taper. The lower jins are the roots that you would expose tilting over and the upper trunk is carved again to reduce some of the reverse taper.

Anyway that my idea FWIW.

Cheers
Ian

It was Jim Smith and Jim Vanlandinghams idea to turn it a little to the left and bend it on the side. Jim Smith said that when you have a hollowed out trunk like that it is better to turn it a little and add some mystery. At a show the people can always look to the side and see what is in it.

About laying it on its side that was to erase the reverse taper. The other option would be to add rocks to the base but that would only make people think that I am trying to hide reverse taper.

About turning the foliage in reverse that was just an idea from Jim Vanlandingham and its a strong possibilty it will be more like Jims virtual.

Charles, I had already figured out the reasoning behind the turning leftwards and tilting... . And even though the suggestions come from respected sources, I'm still ambivalent

A minor problem though... perhaps you will be unable to turn leftwards and tilt leftwards without negating the mystery of the hollow - it will be pointing at the soil, or perhaps even resting on it, and may not be discernable without a close-up scrutiny or prior knowledge...

Just bandying thoughts about...

Regards,

Chris/TB
