Please excuse my ignorance, but when would the seed cones drop you say? Spring or so? And I would assume that finding cones now is illogical?

No Ignorance
BonifaceVIII; If you wait until spring your cones will all have opened and all of the seed be gone. The bald cypress (taxodium distengtum) drops its dried out seed cones with its foliage. Our trees are doing this now. I am in central California, I would say that northern states have already droped and southern states are yet to drop, so the question of seeds will depend on where you are. The beautiful thing about Bonsai is that there is always next fall and a new set of seeds.
