I went down to lowes today and picked up a 35 gallon plastic 'pond' to plant it in. I just potted it up a few minutes ago. I will get a picture up when I have a chance.
Dale if you make pots this large (35 inches in diameter), I would love to buy one custom made for it. Of course, that would be a few years from now.

Charles: That "pond" sounds just right! I don't want to even think about carrying a 35" diameter ceramic pot, let alone one with a tree in it! Good luck. You have a great tree and the time and skills to develop it. |

Nearly 30 dollars worth of soil later, here it is (I never realised how much younger I look wearing my hair down
).BTW, someone at the site had a chainsaw, so after I took the first picture I cut it a little bit lower. I still need to do a taper chop, but that will come later.

Shucks do I have alot to learn!
May seems like a stupid question, but do you hold high hopes of it surviving with no roots? I apparently have more than I realized to learn about collecting. I also am now more confident in the collectiong I did of a Quercus agrifolia recently.

I am positive it will survive with that amount of roots. It actually has many fiborous (sp?) roots growing on it. There are, of course, other factors that can kill a tree.
Bald cypress don't mind being chopped up like this.

Charles,
What a great one you got there....and the pot is a perfect fit! I too use plastic ponds and bins for large collected specimens. Little Arborist, There is a huge difference between what you would chop off of a BC and an oak tree when you collect. BC's will tolerate such chopping and grow roots almost readily. An oak on the other hand may need to have much more of a root ball still on it for survival when collected. I have learned that you should always get to know the tree before collecting to ensure its survival is greater. Generally, and I am not a collecting guru, you can be sure that trees that grow in drier soils would need more of a rootball than that of their swampy cousins. Paul

We live and learn
I must say, I am impressed.
That adds up to good tree biology sense though. The oak I collected will surprise me if it makes it, but I collected it more as an experiment to gain experience than anything. There are hundreds of them where I collected it.I'll eventually post a pic if it makes it. I'll be curious to see how that big ole' cypress comes out in the end. Looks nice from here.

Nice job, Charles! That is one monster. Looks like you got the right "pot" for training. Better start saving up for its final pot . . . it's going to need a big one.
Please keep us updated on its progress. I'd love to see the branches/apex develop.

Charles, I was up at Brussels Nursury in Miss. this weekend. They had quite a few very large pots, you could check with them. I got a hand made 26" oval for 1/2 off, so it was just $90. He had some that were much larger than the one I got. They are not on his website or in the catalog, so you should just give them a call and ask. Hope this helps.

John,
I will decide that much later. This tree still has about three to five years before it ends up in a bonsai pot. Thanks for the tip though, I will have to look into it sometime.
