Bald Cypress Collecting Trip

I had the privilege of going with some of the members of the Triangle Bonsai Society of Raleigh, NC on a collecting trip yesterday, 23Feb08.

Attached is a tree that I brought home and a photo of what part of the area looked like where we collected. It was private land and the land owner had given permission to the group.

It was quite a place to see. In general the photo all of the small trees you see in the background with the reddish brown branching are bald cypress trees. The most difficult part of this trip was to decide which tree you wanted to remove. You could find one really nice tree, walk 50 feet and find two more better.

The club members were able to get some very nice bonsai stock to take back home.

There were a number of hornbeam and hawthorns collected and I saw at least one beech tree in the back of a truck.

This was the second of two days that the club was allowed access to the property for collecting. There were quite a few very nice trees dug last weekend as well.

I found this tree last week and couldn't decide if it needed digging or not. After a week of contemplation I went back and got it. At the base it is about 5" across, the main trunk is about 14" tall. It had been cut off in it's past history, don't know if by beaver or human work. But at any rate it recovered quite nicely and the cut is healing over.

Because of the uncontrolled growth at the cut line there is some expansion of the trunk that will have to be dealt with. I don't think this will be a problem and over the next two to three years I feel this will develop into a very, very nice bonsai.

Any suggestions on how to deal with that issue would be apreciated.

Mac:

Another Cypress fan...Nice find, just let the tree grow.
It'll sprout from the trunk, you can pick the best branches you want and get rid of the rest.

thanks for sharing!

I put it in it's new home this morning. That is a 5 gal. water lilly pot that it is in. They make good training pots, cheap and shallow. All you need do is cut a couple of holes in the bottom for dranage.

Redhawk,
I get it. It is very useful.

Go ahead and make the big cut now or let it go till I get some leaf sprouting?

Ya' better wait till it re-covers and you see lots of foliage, maybe late spring early summer.
