One thing I always do with my azaleas after heavy pruning:

I remove all flower buds from the tree, and don't let it flower that year. Flowering slows down growth considerably, taking away energy. A tree recovers much better when it has no burden of the flowering season. I talked to azalea owners who told me that even with healthy azalea bonsai, they only let them flower every other year. This way the tree is much more vigorous.

By the way, Alexander Kennedy describes very nicely in his azalea book that when a flower bud forms at the end of a branch, it acts as a growth-stopper. Hence the multi-stemmed habit. Since the branch cannot grow further, new branches grow from the base of the plant

Attila

Attila,

I too have heard of the practice where growers only let there azalea's bloom everyother year-even on specimen trees. It is good to hear from another person though...kinda confirms the idea for me.
And I plan to keep it from flowering next season. Thanks for the input. It will be well taken.
