Awe Hail!!! 2007
My house is like a magnet for hail. Last year I had hail hit three times in just one day, perhaps as many as 6 times throughout 2006. Today marks the first hail at my house this season. Sizes ranged from quarter to ping-pong ball size.
The storm hit at 3:30 PM, and by a fortuitous accident I just happened to arrive home moments before. Our contractor had not completed the install of our doggie-door so there was a big hole in the back door that I wanted to cover so rain did not get into the house. Only when I looked out the back door did I discover how serious the problem was. There was a outflow boundary quickly approaching and a green color to the sky. I wrapped a towel over my head to protect my melon, and dashed out into the yard rescuing trees. Just as I was bringing in the last shohin into the house the hail started. Whew! Ironically, had the contractor completed the job as he was supposed to have last week, I wouldn't have hurried home in time to save my trees. While earlier in the day I was cursing the contractor for not completing the job, I feel like hugging him now! Cheers, Jim |

I would have given real money to see the Great Swami in his protective turban rescuing his trees!
In all seriousness, that was command thinking! I once ran out in a hail storm to move my car and got clocked with a golfball sized nugget right in the melon. I saw stars for a bit and ran back inside. Luckily the car was tougher than my head. No damage to either! I learned my lesson though. We South Austinites escaped the hail today but last night was Biblical! I found out that shade cloth has two advantages. No trees were harmed, only a couple of taller ones fell over. Mike |

Yep,
you were fortunate indeed that you were home at just the right time. I wasn't so fortunate back in 2003 after moving to a new subdivision and a six month old house that needed a new roof after that string of storms that night while I was at work. I posted a few pics Here of some of the damage. Spring storms in Tx. and bonsai just don't go together at all. The level of anxiety that you go through every time the sky darkens a little, is overwhelming. Glad you made out alright. ![]()
