Automatic Watering Systems

I will be travelling offboard in a couple of weeks, and wanted to leave my trees here irrigated by an automatic watering system, I found one that suits my necesities, but don't knowwhere to buy it. the system is This one

If you have any info on automatic watering systems, specially the automatic valve (because the pipes I get them here for $0.50 the meter, or even less), I would appreciate it... Thanks a lot...

From what I read on this timer it should do the job for you.
My practical experience is with timers with different zones..My automated system is overhead sprinklers.
The timer you are looking at is for one zone. I haven't used the individual spray heads for each tree either. I have seen there use and have been told
they work well. Hopefully someone on this forum has had some
firsthand experience with this timer.

Well, I've already bought a timer so I will just have some automatic sprinklers, and that's about it... since, I will be flying on December, and considering the time that will take to get the products... mmm... I had to hurry a little... so, thanks anyway, and I'll keep you updated on how is it working...

Automatic watering systems

Here is the problem as I see it. It is not if an automatic watering system fails it is more about when. At some point it will fail and if no one is watching then you loose. Even if I trusted the watering system that I have built I would still charge someone to go every day and look at my trees paying close attention to there condition with the instructions of call me if you see any change. I would also call that person to ask if everything is ok.
Trees are pro active and when you do not pay attention to them they may die. I have always trained someone to care for my trees charged them with that care and payed them for taking the responsibility. I have never lost trees whal I was out of town even when gone for as much as a month.

Here is my 2 cents on the auto watering thing. I have used it and will continue to with some changes. My system is very simple, mini pipe with drip watering to each plant. It is hooked up to a battery timer that will go on from twice a day to once a week. The duration of the watering is also adjustable from 3 minutes to one hour.

Does it work...YUP! Does it work well...To good!

I think that the auto water was the cause of the rot in my Chinese Elm mentioned in another thread. The system is so easy, it is possible to rely on it, even when you are home! BIG MISTAKE!! Every plant needs different watering schedules and different watering amounts....I know .... you all know this, well so did I!

If you are away for a week or two..or perhaps a little more.. auto water is fine. You probably will over water a bit. Overwatering over the short term isn't as bad as underwatering! But over the long time frame, it can be just as bad!

So in the future.... I will only auto water when away from home. If I home I will only water when needed by hand!

A another lesson learned!

Rips: My sister will keep the eye you mentioned on my trees, she is staying home, so I'm planning to call her after the first week .

Steph: Costa Rica

Jay: I will be away only for 15 days, and the system will be used only by that time

Thank you all...

Watering systems

Jose; I am glad to hear this as I have already heard too many stories of people who put their faith in a watering system just to have it fail when they were away, causing the expected disaster. Enjoy your trip, and I hope everything goes as you have planned it.

Bonsaimon (If you are still following this thread): tell us more about your overhead system. I, too, am planning to install a system this summer for use while I'm away. I will be gone alot and I have had trouble with finding people who really watch my trees in the correct way. They will still be checking but I figure a system is better for a couple weeks at a time.

The dripers in each pot seems a real pain, especially when I add all our indoor plants. An overhead system would work quite well with two or three heads. So I'm curious how you planned yours.

Jose: I envy you. Costa Rica is on my "drool for" list. I have an ecotourist type place all picked out where I can indulge my love of kayaking in rivers and ocean. The beauty seems spectacular. Someday... So think of me while you are there.
