Australian Projects. #1

For those who made it to the first talk group tonight thanks for coming.

From the chatter and questions thrown around we decided on the first project. Our goal to try new forms of Australian natives and suitability as bonsai. Not only will the basic techniques be tested but hopefully at some point more advanced ones as well.

For those undertaking this experiment http://asgap.org.au/gallery.html (It does not need to be limited by this website). Have a browse pick two species you would like to try out and go from there (just let the rest know what you have chosen).

Remember finding the species maybe a challenge in itself. But without trying we wont be able to learn.

*Edit this is the following list of documented species being grow as bonsai. Try stay away from these guys, although for now cultivars will be ok. But just remember, the aim of the project.

http://asgap.org.au/bonsai/Australi..._as_Bonsai.html

Good luck.

Gday A-man!

Good work organizing the inaugural Oz Chat Meeting - seems a good time was had by all, and we even managed to exchange some information! Sorry I had to crash so early, but getting up at 0400 had its drawbacks...

Since I don't see anybody else putting their hand up, I'll get the ball rolling with my 2 choices of material to experiment upon:

Dodonea viscosa

Bursaria spinosa

I hope to collect the latter, but the former may have to come from cutting/layering of nursery bought material. I'll keep y'all posted once I get my hands on some appropriate specimens.

Thanks.

Fly.

Best Idea would be to contact perth botanic gardens. Explain why your after the subject.

So far I have chosen ficus watkinsiana commonly known as strangler fig.

I Also plan to dig a few acacia pendulum from the park. There are a large number growing wild.

Ben, good work here. I will be aiming to get Kunzea Baxteri and Leptospermum Laevigatum as my two Aussie natives. I should be able to get them both locally as we have a native nursery here in town. This is a great project.

Both are very good as Bonsai subjects I do not have laevigatum. I do have baxteri. Which I treat as I would Callistemon. One of my ex students has a very nice group of coastal tee trees ( Leptospermum laevigatum ) I will try to find it in my files.

Hi Ash,

I have a Leptospermum laevigatum that i bought last year for about $2. It was a year old at the time, and had out grown its tinny pot. It was about 10 cm in height, reached about a metre a few weeks ago and then i cut it back last week. I don't know if its the right time of the year or not but this thing is very vigorous, i don't suspect it will even notice. It is growing in pure sharp/coarse sand, nothing else. Fertilized with osmocote slow release native. He also receives "weak" solution (1 cap full/9litres of water) pf seasol once every two weeks.
