Nice points Jay, and thanks. but.. I think we are still missing something here. I think that the amout of real collectors of bonsai is so negligible that it hardly warrants talking about. If someone wants to buy a bonsai, I mean a bonsai person, then they probably have a long term goal in mind for the tree they are buying. I have seen trees from Japan, Europe, and yes the US, that I would love to get a hold of to put my mark on. These would be trees that would be considered collectable, or of value to collect.
I think to get a true answer, this would need the input from someone that would truely pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for someones work in progress, and find out what motivates them.
We all "do" bonsai too much to guess, and will always be motivated by the "what may be" of the tree to give a suitable reply.
