Regardless of conditions, dry, hot, cold, or wet a Maple should never be put in a situation where it will soak in water. Of course her in Michigan this is seldom a problem in the winter where they are frozen solid till the first of April.
If you think you have this problem your trees should be over-wintered under cover or have the pots elevated so that excess water drains off or out. The success of this effort does however depend on the porosity of the soil mix. If you plant in muck you are in trouble. |

We've had two months of wind nearly every afternoon on the Central Coast. The leaves couldn't take it!

This is the best my maples have done in 6 years. We had a cool wet winter, so maybe that helped. But then again ask me around aug or sept and maybe I"ll be singing a different tune.

They ARE wintered under cover. However I think the cause may have been stated. WIND! That's sure what it looks like. I bet a couple of those hot windy days were days I was thinking about something else.
