Any other Californians have LOUSY maples this year?

I think the crazy weather MOLESTED mine. Not quite murder but close.

The only decent looking maple is the air layered one. That's crazy.

Withery half starved leaves all curled up and yellow and ragged.

They got moisture. But the combo of heat and then hail and then heat again seems to have done em in for this year.

I'm doing pretty good with the maples, but I'm close to the coast. Sounds like the central valley is a tough go of it this spring.

I started my Acer Palmatums in mid-feruary this year. I think I have about 15 going. Some are thriving, some are lookin' pewny and still only have two leaves...

The ones in plastic pots seem to be doing the worst. The ones in paper pots, and the ones in the larger clay pots seem to be doing the best. The ones in the smaller clay pots vary, but none are as pewny as the ones in the plastic pots...

...as far as color goes, they're all lookin good and green, except for a lil deep red on some of the stressed lookin' ones...

I'm too new to know a good year from a bad one. But I think this is a bad one. I had some seedling growing and leafing out. All of them had dropped their leaves and are more or less sticks-iin-the-ground. I'm hoping for a second leafing, but I'm skeptical.

I am not sure what's going on here, but for me it it was the best year so far, as far as maples are concerned.

They loved the cloudy and rainy weather much more than the usual strong sun common around here. The leaves are all healthy and fresh looking, and overall the trees are happier than ever.

Plastic pots tend to get hot because mostly they are of a dark color. You might try moving them into a partially shaded area where they get only morning sun. How long has it been since they were repotted? Maples generally don't do well unless they are repotted every three years or so, couple being root bound with a hot pot and you have trouble. It is also likely the soil has broken down causing some drainage problems.

Japanese Maples are also sticklers for consistancy. You can keep them on the dry side, or you can keep them on the wet side but you cannot switch back and forth.

You may already know all of this stuff, I'm just tossing out there the things I know that can cause the problems you are experiencing.

A very informed bonsai instructor told our club that due to the extra rainy year in California many trees would suffer from root damage. She told us that the trees would be weaker than normal and some may die from the roots spending the winter soaking in water. Many of my maples appear to be doing well but some do seem like they are showing signs of stress as she perdicted.

Things are looking great here for maples in Silicon Valley. Better than usual, in fact, for me!

Regards,

Matt

Primo goodo hear in the central valley... very mild introduction to summer so far. I hope it stays. If it were to be like this year round, I couldn't afford to buy a home here.
