American Elm
I'm just curious, but does anyone have an American elm they are training as bonsai? I know it's possible since I had a tree( it was stolen unfortunately; I guess it was that good!) that was turning out great. They don't seem to be popular on the internet searchs, so I wanted to see if anybody has one, or a friend who has one. Any stories welcome.

No, I haven't really seen it anywhere. I think it's because so many of the trees were hit so hard by Dutch Elm disease that people are way of them (Chinese elms are resistant - the disease originated in Asia).
Anyway, there are starting to be a number of varieties available that are resistant to DED. Initially, the only way people could achieve this was through hybridization with Asian elms, however, there are now pure varieties available... Maybe I should order some and give it a try. I'd love to see a classic vase-shaped american elm bonsai. (which I haven't seen anywhere, _yet_) ![]() Will |

you should not have a problem with dutch elm disease with any american elm bonsai. The beetles that spread the disease usually enter in the crotches of limbs 10+ feet up the tree, so your bonsai on its bench should be safe.

Yes I have two collected American Elms that are still in my grow bed recovering from trunk chops this spring. They grow like weeds up at my cabin. Their resemblance to korean hornbeams in leave size and shape is uncanny.
So far so good, I am looking to collect some bigger ones soon as these two seem to be responding quite well. I believe these would make a great forest planting. Good luck |

I have a twin-trunk American elm that was collected by a good friend of mine several years ago. He had styled it in a pine tree style, and I decided I wanted to go in a different direction with it after he generously gave it to me two years ago. You can see it at Sashi-eda Bonsai Weblog.
