an amazing Buttonwood

The post of Victrina Ensor's has been very exciting for me, since I love to see the development of drawing Bonsai.

The day after Christmas I started the enclosed oil painting, and could not show it until the owner was satisfied with the results. I recieved the final OK of this painting and so it can now be shown.

This is a Buttonwood, and I doubt that there aren't a few Bonsai lovers who wouldn't like to own a tree that looks like this.

The first picture is what I worked from. The second and third picture is my oil painting.

Hope you charged him at least every penny a tree like that would go for! If not double. Gorgeous.

What a brilliant expression of a real tree Carl.... I love it. I am greatly impressed with both the photo and the painting... mainly because the effect of light and shadows was used. I am delighted to see how well you carried off conveying that neuance in your work... no small task by any means... And given the complexity of the tree to begin with... it's a beautiful rendition.

I would certainly enjoy to own such a masterful work... and I don't just mean the tree itself.

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

Well done indeed. Buttonwood as in Conocarpus erectus?

Wow! You and the tree owner are both to be commended.

kINGKONG: You are correct a Conocarpus erectus. It happens to be one of my favorite trees, and an honor to paint such a beauty.... I do own two Buttonwoods, but nothing that even comes close to this beauty.

For those who are members of the ABS, here is the logo for the Virginia Beach Convention coming in June (I believe...)

The Bonsai in this logo is my Buttonwood.

carl, another beautiful painting!! you are an incredible talent for sure. seeing a buttonwood of that stature is amazing, i am so used to seeing lots of deadwood with little branching and foliage.

Thanks to all of you that appreciate my showing this painting. I have to admit this was a labor of love and the only complaint I had was from my neck muscles after a four to six hour session... The painting took a little over sixty hours to produce. Frankly, I am quite pleased that it came out as well as it did.

For those who are interested here is the original drawing on tracing paper and the second picture is after I had transferred (with white saral) paper the drawing onto a black painted canvas (my own black made with Burnt umber and Ultramarine blue) .
