Alternative deadwood

At the Ginkgo show this year I saw a fantastic Escallonia full of beautiful carved deadwood. The thing that worked so well for me was the mature brown tone of the wood, bleached white on this kind of deciduous tree would just be too harsh.

I have a trident that was carved last year, its weathered for I year and I want to achieve the same effect.

Any ideas as to what will give the deadwood protection and this rich brown tone?

Regards
Arnie

Speaking from only what I have read and not from experience, I have heard of people who add india ink or dye pigments to the lime sulphur so that the wood is not bleached completely white.

Linseed oil may do what you want. Whatever product you use, try a little bit on an inconspicuous spot and let it sit set for 24 hours before you judge the result.

I would be reluctant to use any oil-based paint that would seal the surface grain. It would ruin the appearance. How about trying an organic dye? For example, a water extract of walnut husks would produce a rich brown and weather-resistant stain. I would also keep using the lime sulfur (IUPAC spelling) to stave off decay.
